Can you believe half of 2021 has already gone by? Earlier this year, we’ve started on a massive effort to completely re-engineer our product and platform. We’ve been hard at work improving all aspects of MyWikis, from the wiki’s infrastructure to making it easier to manage your wiki. We’d like to revisit some of the exciting announcements we gave, as well as share a sneak peek at what’s coming next:

  • In April, we launched our new Gen2 platform. It offers many improvements over our previous platform. We’ve designed it from the ground up to maximize ease-of-use, functionality, extensibility, customization, and…

For over 9 years, we have been providing quality MediaWiki wiki hosting with each plan at the same low prices they started out with. We’ve avoided a large scale price increase for many years and have grandfathered our existing customers on the prices they signed up with.

As we continue to grow, we’ve added more value-adding features unique to MyWikis, and we continue to make behind-the-scenes improvements to make your wiki run faster than ever before. Additionally, we’ve begun to hire talented software engineers with computer science degrees from top universities in the world. In order to make our future…

On Inauguration Day 2021, hours after Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, I departed the United States for London Heathrow. I was on my way to Dubai for the first time. What I expected to be two weeks in Dubai turned into four after my travel plans were derailed due to the British government’s new coronavirus restrictions. However, I had a ton of fun and enjoyed the nice change of pace from the United States. I was thrilled by being in a new country, taking in the (diversity of) culture, and the way…

Beginning today, we’re introducing a few changes to how we process payments for clients based in Europe.

First, we have introduced new payment methods for our European clients.

  • We now support SEPA. You can set up a recurring transfer.
  • In addition, we also support BACS for UK clients.
  • We’ve changed our credit/debit card processing scheme for EU/UK clients. Your credit/debit card will now be processed by our UK entity. This change is necessary for us to implement VAT beginning 1 July 2021. At the moment, no action is needed on your part. …

New EU regulations coming into effect on 1 July 2021 eliminate the VAT exemption that currently applies to MyWikis. As a result, to comply with European Union regulations, MyWikis will begin collecting VAT at the rate of your home country for all payments occurring after 1 July 2021 to those in the EU area.

Integrating VAT into our prices requires us to regionalize prices to best adapt to local taxation rates. Beginning 1 July 2021 or earlier, you may begin to see new prices adapted to the inclusion of VAT. In order to streamline our prices, we will begin collecting…

Over the past couple of years, we’ve been excited to provide MyWikis Hosted Parsoid as a service for self-hosted wikis at dirt cheap rates. As VisualEditor has been improved year after year, it’s come to the point where VisualEditor can now be ran off of a PHP-based backend that doesn’t require a Node.js backend process for parsing wikitext into HTML and vice versa. This change was made with the release of MediaWiki 1.35, the latest LTS release. Because of this, Hosted Parsoid is no longer necessary.

On March 1, 2021, we will be officially sunsetting Hosted Parsoid. Effective immediately (February…

As we continue to upgrade wikis to MediaWiki 1.35, we will begin changing wikis from basic question captchas to using hCaptcha, in an effort to bolster the anti-spam measures protecting MyWikis wikis from spam attacks.

hCaptcha is an alternative captcha to reCAPTCHA. While reCAPTCHA may be the industry leading captcha, we’ve chosen hCaptcha over it for a couple of reasons:

  • In our experience, reCAPTCHA has been proven to be ineffective. Spambots can crack reCAPTCHA challenges by using its accessibility feature, which is easily cracked by using speech-to-text technologies. This results in spam on wikis, which obviously nobody likes.
  • hCaptcha has…

We’re excited to announce the Self Service portal, now available on all non-VPS wikis.

With the Self Service portal, you’ll be able to perform tasks once only our support team could perform for you. Now you can perform them at a click of a button. You can access the Self Service portal by going to https://selfservice.mywikis.net/portal.php. To access your wiki’s Self Service feature, visit the Special:SelfService page on your wiki.

As of March 2021, the Self Service portal gives you the ability to immediately and automatically reset user passwords, add extensions and skins, and more.

At the moment, the on-wiki…

We are currently sunsetting MyWikis Free, a product we last offered several years ago, in a process that is expected to finish by the end of the 2020 calendar year.

When MyWikis was founded, all wikis were on our free plan. MyWikis wikis created for free between February 2012 and December 31, 2014 without a security deposit are no longer supported and will be deleted on August 1, 2020.

Several years ago, we briefly offered a MyWikis Free plan that was available with a small security deposit. We planned to provide support for these security deposit-backed MyWikis Free wikis for…

At MyWikis, we’re proud to serve clients from all around the world, from every continent except Antarctica. As a company based in the United States, we’ve mostly priced our services in US Dollars in order to streamline our operations. With our transition to the MyWikis Client Panel two years ago and to Stripe last year, we’re now confident that we can roll out support for currencies other than the US Dollar.

Beginning on July 30, 2020, we are transitioning customers in the United Kingdom and the Eurozone to using their own currencies (the Pound Sterling and Euro, respectively) for credit…
